Richard Ledger, Chairman of the Long Eaton Town Deal Board, backed a decision by all members to cancel the proposed £6.93 million Derby Road junction project in favour of securing and enhancing other regeneration projects.
Due to the complexity of the issues around these junctions and the current exceptional inflationary pressures, it has not proven possible to design a Derby Road Junctions project that is value for taxpayer’s money. It is proposed that the funding will instead be reallocated to secure three of the other key projects; Long Eaton High Street, Long Eaton Walking and Cycling Network, and the Stable Block Managed Workspace. This will include:
- An additional £3.43 million for the High Street project which will see a redesign and upgrade of the High Street with the aim being to enhance the public space by making it a more sociable space with seating and planting. The reallocated funding also enables an expansion in scope to include Tamworth Road.
- An additional £2.96 million for the walking and cycleway improvements which will include lighting along the cycleway within West Park and replacing the bridge which connects West Park to the town centre, as well as the construction of a new bridge on Britannia Road.
- An additional £540,000 for the Stable Block which will see the conversion of a former Stable Block next to Long Eaton Town Hall into modern office spaces and studios. VIDEO: Watch on YouTube: How the Stable Block Business Centre could look.
The decision was not taken lightly by the Town Deal Board which is made up of independent members from the Long Eaton business and voluntary community as well as representation from the local authority and other organisations. It was agreed at the meeting that the £6.93 million would be reallocated to other projects to help offset rising inflation and other cost pressures.
Richard Ledger, chair of the long Eaton Town Deal, says:
“Unfortunately there has been no alternative but to cancel the Derby Road Junctions project. Costs accelerated at a rate where we could no longer deliver this as a viable project, however we can now make the best use of the remaining funding by enhancing other Town Deal projects. These developments will benefit the residents of the town and deliver value for money.”

The submission of a Summary Document to Government for the proposed Galaxy Row redevelopment project, part of the Long Eaton Town Deal, has been approved by Erewash Borough Council.
On December 13 Council Executive considered the project summary to claim the remainder of the £3.5m Towns Fund grant funding from the government that is needed for the project.
The aim of the project is to remove the eye sore of the former derelict Galaxy cinema on Derby Road and replace it with a new development made up of commercial and residential units, including a courtyard/car park, that enhance the town centre. This would be part of a larger development which includes the former cinema, a tyre depot, adjacent shop fitter’s store and former Stage 1 bar and nightclub. Galaxy Row is one of six projects that form the town deal. The development would create new jobs and benefit the town centre economy.
If funding is secured it will be necessary for the council to use compulsory purchase powers to acquire the buildings in order for the development to proceed.

With this funding in place the plans for Galaxy Row can really start to gain pace and we look forward to sharing further news of town centre regeneration with residents.”
In July 2021 Council Executive approved heads of terms with government to deliver the projects in the investment plan using £24.8 million of town deal funding. The other projects are:
- West Park visitor attractions, including an events space and waterfront.
- Stable Block Managed Workspace Units. Conversion of a former stable block into office space.
- Pedestrian and cycleway improvements, including bridges at Broad Street which connects West Park to the town centre and Britannia Road.
- Improving Derby Road Junctions around Long Eaton Green.
- Long Eaton High Street.

Richard Ledger, Chairman of the Long Eaton Town Board backed a decision by all of its members bar one to close down the proposed £5.59 million Box Office Cultural Hub development in favour of securing the remaining regeneration projects and to resurrect the previously mothballed Britannia Road Canal Bridge as part of the Long Eaton Walking and Cycling project.
The decision was not taken lightly by the board which is made up of independent members from the Long Eaton business and voluntary community as well as representation from the local authority and other organisations. It was agreed at the meeting that the £5.59m would be reallocated to other projects to help offset rising inflation and other cost pressures.
The other projects that will benefit from a much welcomed cash injection will include the Galaxy Row development receiving an additional £0.68m; the Long Eaton High Street and Derby Road Junction projects will receive a further investment of £1.7m and £1.6m respectively to mitigate inflationary and other cost pressures.
The Britannia Road Canal Bridge, previously withdrawn due to a lack of funds will now be reinstated thanks to reallocated support of £1.61 million and will offer a much welcome addition to the Long Eaton Walking and Cycling project.

“Whilst it has been an extremely difficult decision to close the Box Office Cultural Hub project, we are pleased to see the Britannia Road Canal Bridge reinstated and the reallocated funding helping to secure other developments that have been challenged by rising inflation and other cost pressures. I look forward to sharing progress in the near future as the Board continues to work hard to make a real difference and deliver regeneration for Long Eaton.”
As the projects move forward they are subject to change, taking account of external factors that are beyond the control of the Long Eaton Town Board.

Long Eaton Town Deal branded waste freighters have hit the road.
Four liveried waste freighters wrapped with publicity on the Long Eaton Town Deal projects were launched recently. The vehicles were presented at a media event held at West Park in Long Eaton. Richard Ledger, Chairman of the Long Eaton Town Deal Board and Councillor Carol Hart, Deputy Chair and Leader of Erewash Borough Council gave an official ‘send-off’ for the vehicles in support of Long Eaton’s regeneration campaign.
The branded waste freighters will help to raise awareness of Long Eaton’s regeneration projects and encourage residents to get on board with the fantastic work being undertaken to transform Long Eaton town centre.
The Long Eaton Town Deal will see almost £25 million of Government funding go towards numerous projects which will benefit the town and community.

The designs for commercial office space at former stable blocks in Long Eaton have been revealed.
The plans for the buildings are part of the old Stables Business Centre that form part of the Long Eaton Town Deal. The designs, pictured, have been created by contractor Billy Garner.
The project forms part of the Long Eaton Town Deal which will see up to £25 million of Government funding invested into the town, with several projects being developed.
