Long Eaton is a flat and compact town, well suited for cyclists and pedestrians. The Town Board wanted to improve the connectivity around areas of the town, including the bridge at Broad Street that connects West Park to the town centre. The old Broad Street Bridge was narrow, the ramps were steep and it was dangerously low for people cycling along the canal towpath. More importantly it didn't connect with the canal towpath. The spectacular new bridge, poised to become an Erewash landmark, has solved all these issues.

See the images and videos below for a glimpse of the bridge design and its progress towards completion. The sweeping curve of steel – featuring a stunning suspension arch has transformed the area’s waterfront.  The iconic crossing for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users spans the Erewash Canal – linking the centre of Long Eaton to the town’s much-loved West Park. 

In August 2026, West Park Bridge was chosen as the new name of the bridge.  See news: Iconic new span gets a name: West Park Bridge.

Waterfront - COMPLETED

West Park Visitor Attractions

At the foot of the iconic new bridge, a new ‘Waterfront’ has been built alongside the Erewash Canal with the potential for quayside moorings to enable commercial boats to provide food and drink or water sports activities, along with decking and street furniture to allow visitors to enjoy the waterside environment, including permits for small scale (cinema, stage or other) performances. 

Construction of the new West Park Bridge and Waterfront began in November 2025 and both were completed and opened in September 2026.
