Galaxy Row - DEMOLITION IN PROGRESS

Medium Scale Project (£5m- £9m)

Background

The former Galaxy cinema on Derby Road is derelict and blights the approach to Long Eaton town centre. However, its plot suffers from a lack of natural light, no rear access and poor parking prospects, which have so far prevented any viable schemes for its redevelopment coming forwards. If a larger plot was assembled then the site could be redeveloped for high quality apartments that would attract new residents to live in and use the town centre. The Council adopted a Development Brief for the Galaxy Row site in 2021. This document is intended to set out the planning and design objectives to guide the regeneration proposals and help bring forward the redevelopment of the site. View the Galaxy Row Development Brief (this is a 3.29MB PDF document).

Demolition and development

Demolition of the Galaxy cinema started in May 2025 and is expected to take approximately four months.  Rather than traditional demolition, the building is being carefully dismantled, allowing the bricks to be cleaned and reclaimed for future reuse - significantly reducing waste and diverting valuable resources from landfill.

Development will commence immediately afterwards and will consist of: -

  • One and two bed apartments for Affordable Housing, that will be let through the housing provider Tuntum.
  • Three bed family townhouses for shared ownership, to be marketed later in the construction phase, also by housing provider Tuntum.
  • Three commercial units with car parking that will be marketed later in the construction phase by Erewash Borough Council.
