Why is this work necessary?

Online retail, large out-of-town shops, and supermarkets have contributed to a reduction in footfall in Long Eaton in recent decades. By making this area a more attractive place for everyone, we want to encourage the local community and visitors back into the town centre. In 2020, we asked the local community to give us feedback on our vision for Long Eaton, including improvements to the High Street. This feedback told us:

  • the High Street should be redesigned and upgraded to align with the high design standards of the Market Place
  • the market should move back to the traditional Market Place;
  • more seating should be provided along the High Street;
  • more greenery should be provided on High Street;
  • and cycle stands should be provided in the town centre.

You can read the Town Investment Plan for more information on the rationale behind the Town Deal projects.

Background to the High Street Regeneration programme

This project was informed by two initial public consultations in July/August and October/November 2020 that asked local people their priorities for Long Eaton. An additional consultation for the proposed High Street design ran in January/February 2025. Specific user groups including High Street businesses, taxi drivers, market traders, bus companies, and blue badge holder on the High Street were also engaged.

The government specified that this round of funding can only to be spent in Long Eaton. Erewash Borough Council submitted £20 million Levelling Up bid for Ilkeston in July 2022 which the Government at the time rejected. The Council is now using funds from its own Erewash Investment Fund to improve Ilkeston Town Centre. The Government has recently announced a £20 million Pride in Place fund for Cotmanhay.

The project is led by Erewash Borough Council working with Derbyshire County Council as the key delivery partner with oversight from the Long Eaton Town Deal Board. The Galliford Try team designed the High Street Regeneration and will be completing the work.

The Government awarded us money to regenerate the High Street, and we cannot make any significant changes to the project that they agreed to fund. This money must be fully spent by the end of March 2028, even small changes risk delaying the project past this deadline.

The project will cost £10 million. This has been carefully costed with allowances for inflation and for contingencies that may arise during the work.

Any project of this size needs a long lead time to design and plan the work alongside partner organisations. The lead-in time included opportunities for public consultation on the emerging designs. This project has also been developed alongside 6 other Long Eaton Town Deal projects.

How is the work being procured?

All of the contracts to deliver work as part of the Long Eaton Town Deal programme have been advertised in line with public sector procurement regulations to be sure that competition is fair and open, and we get best value for money.

How else is the Town Deal and the Council supporting the Town Centre?

The Town Deal’s Galaxy Row project will replace the derelict former Galaxy Row Cinema with modern housing and commercial space. While the Broad Street Bridge project is set to replace the bridge from the town centre to West Park, which was approaching the end of its life.

Erewash Borough Council has already taken enforcement action against dilapidated Town Centre properties and directed Government funded grants to cooperative and engaged landlords. Thanks to the Council’s Erewash Investment Fund, grant schemes to improve shopfront and signage will continue into 2026/27 financial year.

Will the projects cause disruption? How is the town centre going to function while this work is going on?

This will make pedestrian and mobility access much more pleasant throughout the town centre.  A new fully pedestrian area will be created in the middle of the High Street between Claye Street and New Street that will prevent through traffic. The northern section of the High Street will see vehicles enter from New Street and Exit onto Cross Street/Main Street while the southern section will see vehicles enter from Claye Street and Exit onto Cross Street and Tamworth Road. This will reduce vehicle traffic on any given part of the High Street. New pedestrian safety measures will be installed along the High Street.
