High Street
Medium Scale Project (£5m- £9m)
Investment from the Townscape Heritage Initiative fund 10 years ago enabled a redesign of the Market Place. However, the rest of the pedestrian area looks dated and the rules regarding vehicles and parking are unclear leading to potential safety risks. The market maybe an underused resource and the High Street can look a little bleak on non-market days.
Then in 2020, Erewash Borough Council, in partnership with Derbyshire County Council commissioned AECOM to produce an Options Report for Long Eaton High Street that was based on consultation with the local community.
Following succesful Town Deal proposals submitted to UK government in 2021, the re-design of the High Street has been progressed to reflect and build on the best of Long Eaton and furthermore, to match the high design standards of the Market Place (opposite the Corner Pin). It has been a long process to get to this point, including further targeted engagement with taxi drivers, street traders, market traders, high street retailers and blue badge parking users which has informed the design.
Some goals that guided the design were to locate the market back to the Market Place, improve the positioning of market stalls in relation to shops, improve street layout, improve safety, introduce more sociable areas for sitting out and enjoying an enhanced green space, incorporate elements that link back to Long Eaton’s industrial and artistic past.
The latest plans include:-
- Remodelling the High Street to make it a visitor attraction in its own right, with a new central square, architectural features, greenery, more seating
- Introduce features to celebrate the local furniture industry and local artist Dame Laura Knight
- Widening of pavements along Tamworth Road and Market Place from Broad Street / Salisbury Street to Oxford Street
- Providing new dedicated blue-badge parking on the old back-market and in existing car parks, and improving the access from parking areas to shopping streets
